Cloudflare proxy vs DNS-only
Cloudflare is powerful, but the orange cloud should not be enabled on every record. Some services must remain DNS-only to work correctly.
Usually proxied
- Website apex record if the origin supports it.
- www record for the website.
Usually DNS-only
- mail.example.com
- MX targets
- autodiscover and mail client records unless specifically designed otherwise
- FTP, cPanel, Webmin or other direct service hostnames
Incorrect proxy settings can cause SSL errors, broken mail, hidden origin issues and confusing tests.
